Stop Thinking You Need Motivation.

Mel Robbins in this interview for Impact Theory explains why she believes motivation to be a debilitating concept which holds people back. She argues that people get fixated with the idea that “one day” they will do the things they really want to do and all that is missing is courage and motivation.

In reality however, it will always be difficult to do things which create risk in our lives and this belief in motivation contradicts the way in which are brains are designed.

The Difference Between Gratification & Happiness: We’ve Known Since 341 BC

Epicureanism is said to be a philosophy of pleasure seeking.

Not in a capitalist sense of “treating oneself” by purchasing instant high in disregard of long term low, Be it through Sugar, alcohol or drugs. Climax is said to be an unsustainable and long term potentially destructive means of pleasure seeking. Real happiness is a state of being in which free expression, feelings of achievement and contribution can lead to the highest form of pleasure – fulfilment.

This short clip explains some of Epicurus’s finding on the importance of friendship. And also provides some interesting nuances to the notion that money and products can provide pleasure.

The Necessity Of New Ideas

The clock is ticking. Welfare economics has eroded in the West as Multinational Companies have taken full advantage of globalisation and far surpassed the wealth of many democratic States. Conflict & economic insecurity have fuelled the largest mass migration crisis in history. But the question, is this simply the natural consequence of our global economic system?

Why do we look at issues of war/economy/migration/climate change in isolation? Could it be that they are all connected to, and symptomatic of, the larger neoliberal global order?

Do we have to describe Countries as either “developing” or “developed” – Why are we all  on the same path to becoming urban concrete jungles of Starbucks & skyscrapers?

Is there perhaps a different path we can walk to eliminate poverty without selling our environment and democracy to private industry?

These are some interesting and important questions the world desperately needs some answers to. This video provides some provocative stoking for the fire.

Okay You Don’t Like Capitalism But What Do You Really Want?

In this thought provoking video philosopher Slavoj Žižek says its time to stop protesting against capitalism, take a step back and actually think what you really want as an alternative. What can you do to dismantle the market structure without regressing into a 20th Century communist system of servitude and domination?

Slavoj Žižek is a Slovenian philosopher and cultural critic. He is a professor at the European Graduate School, International Director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities, Birkbeck College, University of London, and a senior researcher at the Institute of Sociology, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. His books include Living in the End Times, First as Tragedy, Then as Farce, In Defense of Lost Causes, four volumes of the Essential Žižek, and many more.

Where is This Post Brexit Apocalypse Anyway?

This may sound painstakingly obvious but here goes:

Britain has not left the EU yet.

Why then are we inundated with reports in various media outlets saying “pound has stabalised post Brexit” or “consumer confidence back to pre-referendum levels” nothing has happened yet! These brash articles might as well be in the Horoscope section.

We should hold off on crystal ball analysis and wait until negotiations begin. No one on earth knows how the hell Britain will mould the conversation to get their cake & eat it – access to the single market while maintaining controls on migration.

And Bookmakers are even predicting there is a 40% chance Britain will still be in the Union by 2020. Elections loom in both France & Holland next year so there’s a possibility the Union could even collapse under the weight of anti-EU sentiment before Britain get their chance to offically walk out the door.

I understand newspapers have to be written everyday but If  I were you, I wouldn’t believe any Brexit predictions until Spring 2017 when a riper image of both Britain and Europe’s future come into fruition.
